From French MacLean
28 March 1998

Colonel MacLean, author of Quiet Flows the Rhine and The Cruel Hunters, sends this report on his current projects:

"Have completed a work, tentatively titled The Camp Men: The SS Officers Who Ran the Concentration Camps. Turn in to Schiffer Publishing next month; I would hope it would be out by fall. The book reviews the various concentration camps and then provides biographical data on 964 SS officers (lieutenant and higher) who served in them -- data came from their personnel files on microfilm at our National Archives. Every one of the 964 has a half-page entry with all his information to include camps and years he served there. A large final chapter comprehensively analyzes the men by birthplace, religion, Waffen-SS service, decorations received, rank, civilian profession, SS & Party membership, fate, etc. Two conclusions are truly startling and shed new light on the relationship between camp service and front-line Waffen-SS duty. Will have about 136 photos.

"My next work will be completed in May, tentatively titled The Field Men: The SS Officers of the Einsatzkommando. Does the same thing for the several hundred SS officers who served in the mobile killing units. Probably around 200 photos.

"A little longer down the road (target publication next year) I am planning (1) a biography on a Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves winner (I knew him before he passed away and have his personal papers describing his wartime experiences.); (2) a book on Russian and German junior officer and non-commissioned officer courage and bravery on the Eastern Front."
