Forgery suspect arrested
An individual previously convicted of forgery has been arrested in an Oakland, California bookstore where he sold bookplates with allegedly forged autographs in the presence of two undercover police officers. The same individual had reputedly for the previous ten days cut a swath through northern California military bookellers with a blue binder containing a large number of signed bookplates attributed to various British and American fighter aces, German Knights Cross holders, etc. All the materials are suspected of being forged.
The sting in Oakland was the result of hard work, quick thinking, and Internet-based communications following the sale of reportedly fradulent signatures of German U-boat aces to a small militaria store in Petaluma, California. The owners of the store -- both police officers -- mobilized regional law enforcement officials and online booksellers to track and eventually nab the suspect.
Those wishing more information on fradulently autographed books, bookplates, photos, etc can visit the Bookmine website.
If you believe you have been victimized by this individual (or even if there was only an attempt to sell to you, which is illegal), please have your local Police Department make a report and send the case number or -- if you would prefer only making a statement -- forward it by mail or fax along with photocopies of bookplates, bill of sale, and/or anything else relevant to:
Military Antiques, attn: Sgt. Wally Peterson or Charles Numark (Det.-ret.), 260 Petaluma Blvd North, Petaluma CA 94952. Phone 707 763-2220. Fax 707-763-5964. Email email@example.com.
