The more-or-less official history of Japan in the Second World Warthe Senshi Sosho seriesamounts to more than 100 volumes, with the earliest ones dating back to the 1960s. Up until now, English translations of these important books have been almost nonexistent. Ten years ago, the Australian War Memorial produced a book, Japanese Army Operations in the South Pacific Area: New Britain and Papua Campaigns, 1942-43, constructed of extracts from two Japanese volumes.
Now, coming from a rather unusual direction, Leiden University Press in the Netherlands has published an English edition of The Invasion of the Dutch East Indies, volume three in the Japanese series, in conjunction with the Corts Foundation. According to the Foundation, The Operations of the Navy in the Dutch East Indies and the Bay of Bengal, volume 26 in the series, should be published by LUP in February. In addition, the Foundation has received permission to produce an English edition of volume 34, The Struggle in Sumatra and the Air Campaign, although no final decision has been made about publication.
We would vote, by the way, for an early translation of the Japanese chronology volume.
Sometimes we wait a long time for new WWII titles worthy of recommendation. Sometimes they arrive one right after another. Whenever they arrive, we update our Recommended Reading page with books we think deserve an extra mesasure of attention, and today we've done exactly that.
