Hans Skalagard—a native of the Faeroe Islands and mariner who survived the sinkings of three merchant vessels by U-boats during WWII, and subsequently opened his Square Rigger Art Gallery in Carmel after retiring from the sea—died on 3 March in California at the age of 93.
