Hiroo Onoda—a lieutenant in the Japanese Army who remained on duty in the jungle on an island in the Philippines before emerging in 1974—died in Japan on 16 January at the age of 91.

Jerry Coleman—a USMC pilot who flew combat missions in WWII and Korea, played baseball for the New York Yankees, and subsequently enjoyed a long career as a baseball broadcaster—died 5 January in California at the age of 89.
