Author Giuseppe Marciano forwarded to us a copy of his new book, Operazione Baytown: Lo Sbarco Degli Alleati in Calabria, 3 Settembre 1943. Entirely in Italian, this is a fairly detailed study of British 8th Army's crossing from Sicily to the Italian mainland and advance north over the next few days. Especially noteworthy for its attention to Axis operations in opposition to Monty.

Rana Mitter's highly-regarded China's War with Japan, 1937-1945: The Struggle for Survival was published in the UK by Allen Lane in June. The US edition, titled Forgotten Ally: China's World War II, 1937-1945 is now available on this side of the Atlantic from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Whatever the title, this is probably the best book currently available about the war in China.

It is not exactly blazing blitzkrieg speed with which Oxford University Press continues to publish English translations of what amounts to the German official history of WWII, Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg. The next release in that series from OUP, published under the Clarendon imprint, will be Germany and the Second World War, volume 9, part 2: German Wartime Society, 1939-1945: Exploitation, Interpretations, Exclusion, currently scheduled for March 2014.

Rochus Misch—courier, telephone operator, and bodyguard for Adolf Hitler, and the last surviving individual who spent the closing days of the war in the bunker in Berlin—died in Germany on 5 September at the age of 96.
