Gordon Gayle—a highly decorated officer who served with 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, subsequently writing Bloody Beaches: The Marines at Peleliu and retiring as a brigadier general—died in Virginia on 21 April at the age of 95.
