Wilhelm Brasse—a Polish inmate at Auschwitz who, under German orders, photographed thousands of prisoners but disobeyed orders to destroy the photos, preserving the iconic portraits at the end of the war—died in Poland on 23 October at the age of 94.

George McGovern—a veteran of the USAAF during WWII who flew 35 combat missions as a B-24 pilot and co-pilot based in Italy with the 15th Air Force, later serving as a US senator and running unsuccessfully for president—died on 21 October in South Dakota at the age of 90.
