Gazeta Wyborcza—a Polish pilot who fought in the Battle of Britain—died in Canada on 19 October at the age of 97. According to some sources, he was the last surviving Polish pilot from that air campaign.

William Duncan—a WWII veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and later served aboard the SS Jeremiah O'Brien on its anniversary voyage to France in 1994—has died in New Jersey at the age of 87.
