Fred Hargesheimer—a USAAF P-38 pilot who was shot down by a Japanese fighter over New Britain in June 1943, survived 31 days in the jungle, was rescued by local villagers who nursed him back to health and hid him from Japanese patrols for seven months, was eventually evacuated by USN submarine, and after the war returned to build schools, libraries, and clinics—died in Nebraska on 23 December at the age of 94.

Frank Emi—a Japanese-American who was interned at a relocation camp in Wyoming after his home and business were confiscated, and later in the war was imprisoned for resisting federal efforts to draft Japanese-American internees—died in California on 1 December at the age of 94.
