News from J.J. Hays
30 September 2010

Author J.J. Hays sends word—thanks very much!—about his current project, United States Army Ground Forces TOE, World War II:

"I am currently working on Volume 9 of the Army Ground Forces series. The volume will cover Table of Organization prefix number 5, for the US Army Corps of Engineers during the 1940-1945 period. The coverage will include all Corps of Engineer units assigned to Army Ground, Army Service, and Army Air Forces.

"The volume will be in 8 parts (books), the first six cover the US Army Corps of Engineers, in T/O numerical order. The last two parts will cover the Amphibious Engineer Brigades which included service troops units from other branches of the army. I expect to complete the entire volume 9 shortly after year end. They will be available through Military Press."

News from Osprey
14 September 2010

As usual, Osprey Publishing has a batch of fresh releases on bookstore shelves plus additions to the production schedule for later this year. Most notably, they've published this month a new book that proves to be something of a departure from their usual slim softcover offerings. Battleground Prussia: The Assault on Germany's Eastern Front, 1944-45 by Prit Buttar is a hardcover tome measuring about 500 pages that looks like a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Worth a peek even if you don't go for the usual Osprey fare.

New feature
11 September 2010

In addition to providing more than 58,000 chronological records of World War II action, our War Diary already allows you to view daily records from September 1939 through September 1945 for any specific topic (such as Bomber Command missions, the U-boat war, etc). Now you can also search the War Diary and locate all daily records with matching text (such as Benghazi, Iwo Jima, or Tiger). Just choose the "War Diary" option from the pop-up menu in the Quick-Finder search box in the lefthand column on any page. Of course, the Quick-Finder—as always—also allows you to search for authors, titles, publishers, topics, etc.

This day in history
2 September 2010

Sixty-five years ago today, on 2 September 1945, Japan formally surrendered to the Allied powers aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This, by the way, marks the conclusion of our War Diary project, with more than 58,000 entries covering the entire scope of the war from 1 September 1939 through 2 September 1945. We'll continue to improve and add to the daily chronology, but the entire online database of wartime events is now fully accessible.
