This day in history
27 May 2009

Sixty-five years ago today, on 27 May 1944, the war continued to rage around the globe. In Europe, while the Russian Front remained quiet, the Allied bombing offensive grew in ferocity and the US 5th Army and British 8th Army pushed toward Rome. In the Pacific and Asia, the US 41st Infantry Division landed on Biak Island, the Japanese 11th Army opened offensive operations against US airbases in China, the Chinese Y Force advanced slowly on the Salween Front, fighting raged around Myitkyina in Burma, and the battles at Kohima and Imphal continued unabated.
