Sixty-five years ago today, on 28 April 1944, during Exercise Tiger—Allied landing exercises at Lyme Bay—the German 5th and 9th S-Boat flotillas attacked eight USN LSTs escorted by the corvette Azalea and destroyer Saladin, sinking LST-507 and LST-531 with the loss of more than 600 personnel.

Sixty-five years ago today, on 14 April 1944, the freighter Fort Stikine caught fire and exploded in the port of Bombay, destroying more than two dozen other vessels, wrecking the docks, and killing at least 800 people.
