Quentin C. Aanenson—a USAAF fighter pilot who flew 75 combat missions and was featured in the Ken Burns documentary, The War—died on 28 December in Maryland at the age of 87.

Admiral George Stephen Morrison—an ensign aboard the USS Pruitt during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, later in the war a naval aviator, afterwards the US Navy's youngest admiral, and also the father of musician Jim Morrison—died on 17 November in California at the age of 89.

Sixty-five years ago today, on 2 December 1943, a Luftwaffe attack on Allied shipping at Bari harbor in Italy resulted in the loss of eighteen vessels, including the John Harvey, whose cargo of mustard gas accounted for almost 1000 casualties in the harbor area.
