Tom Lantos—a Hungarian Jew who escaped from a Nazi work camp in 1944, was recaptured, escaped again, reached a safe house run by Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, joined the resistance, and after the war became the only Holocaust survivor to serve in the United States House of Representatives—died in Maryland on 11 February at the age of 80.
