Sixty-five years ago today, on 31 January 1943, Field Marshal Paulus surrendered German 6th Army's southern pocket in Stalingrad and went into Soviet captivity while his 11th Korps continued to hold out in the northern pocket of the ruined city.

Former Indonesian leader Suharto—who joined the Royal Netherlands Indies army in 1940, served as an officer in the Japanese-sponsored Peta volunteer militia during the occupation, fought against the Dutch return in 1945, and eventually became ruler of the independent nation—died on 27 January in Jakarta at the age of 86.

This day in history
23 January 2008

Sixty-five years ago today, on 23 January 1943, the Allies received good news from around the globe. On the Russian Front, Soviet troops captured Gumrak, the last airfield in German hands in the Stalingrad pocket. In Libya, British 8th Army entered Tripoli after the long advance from Alamein. In Tunisia, German 5th Panzer Army called off its Operation Eilbote attacks and settled into defensive positions. In the Solomons, Japanese troops on Guadalcanal withdrew toward evacuation points, and Mount Austen was firmly in American hands. In Papua New Guinea, the campaign came to end after destruction of Japanese strongholds at Gona, Buna, and Sanananda.
