This day in history Sixty-five years ago today, on 23 November 1942, spearheads of Soviet 65th Army and 51st Army met near Kalach and encircled German 6th Army in and around Stalingrad.
In memoriam Ian Smithan RAF fighter pilot with 237 (Rhodesia) Squadron who was injured in an air crash in Egypt in 1943, shot down in Italy in 1944, then picked up and sheltered by partisans until he reached an American patrol near the end of the war, and later in life became Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesiadied in South Africa on 20 November at the age of 88.

News from Joe Balkoski "My new book, From Beachhead to Brittany: The 29th Infantry Division at Brest, August - September 1944 will be published in March 2008 by Stackpole Books. It is the second volume in what I hope will be a four-volume history of the 29th Infantry Division in World War II. Volume I, Beyond the Beachhead, was published in 1989. I am currently working on Volume III, Into the Reich, which I hope to have published in 2009."
