Sixty-five years ago today, on 26 October 1942, fighting raged around the globe: German 6th Army and Soviet 62nd Army grappled in Stalingrad, the Second Battle of Alamein continued in Egypt, USN and IJN forces slugged it out in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, and Australian 16th Brigade pushed against the Japanese rearguard on the Kokoka Track.

Nolan Herndon—a B-25 navigator-bombardier on the Doolittle raid who bombed Japan, landed at Vladivostok, and subsequently spent a year in Soviet captivity—died in South Carolina on 7 October at the age of 88.

Sixty-five years ago today, on 11 October 1942, US Navy Task Group 64.2 intercepted a Japanese convoy and bombardment force off Guadalcanal, leading to the naval Battle of Cape Esperance.

Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema—a Dutchman who escaped from the Netherlands in 1940, served in the SOE and RAF, became aide-de-camp to Queen Wilhelmina, and later wrote Soldier of Orange about his wartime experiences—died in Hawaii on 26 September at the age of 90.
