This day in history Sixty-five years ago today, on 26 October 1942, fighting raged around the globe: German 6th Army and Soviet 62nd Army grappled in Stalingrad, the Second Battle of Alamein continued in Egypt, USN and IJN forces slugged it out in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, and Australian 16th Brigade pushed against the Japanese rearguard on the Kokoka Track.

In memoriam Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzemaa Dutchman who escaped from the Netherlands in 1940, served in the SOE and RAF, became aide-de-camp to Queen Wilhelmina, and later wrote Soldier of Orange about his wartime experiencesdied in Hawaii on 26 September at the age of 90.
