Attilio Chiappari—signalman aboard USS Antares who notified USS Ward of a Japanese midget submarine attempting to enter Pearl Harbor just before the Japanese air attack—died in California on 25 August at the age of 91. Ordered by his skipper not to alert Pearl Harbor of the submarine sighting, Chiappari in later life often lamented that he had not disobeyed the order. "It might have made a difference," he said in a 1992 newspaper interview about the lost opportunity to warn the naval base.

Sixty-five years ago today, on 25 August 1942, at the conclusion of the Battle of the Eastern Solomons the Japanese reinforcement convoy bound for Guadalcanal was forced to turn back while in New Guinea Japanese forces landed near Rabi along Milne Bay.

Sixty-five years ago today, on 23 August 1942, the overture to the Battle of Stalingrad occurred when the 16th Panzer Division pushed to the banks of the Volga along the edge of the northern suburbs while Luftflotte 4 conducted massive air attacks against the city.

Waffen-SS officer Heinz Barth—convicted in 1983 for his role in the 1944 massacre of the inhabitants of the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane and sentenced to life in prison—reportedly died in Germany within the last few days at the age of 86.
