In memoriam Attilio Chiapparisignalman aboard USS Antares who notified USS Ward of a Japanese midget submarine attempting to enter Pearl Harbor just before the Japanese air attackdied in California on 25 August at the age of 91. Ordered by his skipper not to alert Pearl Harbor of the submarine sighting, Chiappari in later life often lamented that he had not disobeyed the order. "It might have made a difference," he said in a 1992 newspaper interview about the lost opportunity to warn the naval base.
This day in history Sixty-five years ago today, on 30 August 1942, Panzer Army Afrika began attacking British 8th Army in the Battle of Alam Halfa.

News from Greg Urwin Author Greg Urwin tells us he is now "...more than halfway finished with writing the sequel to Facing Fearful Odds. This new book, Victory in Defeat: The Wake Island Defenders as Prisoners of War, 1941-1945, explains how so many of the Americans captured on Wake Island on December 23, 1941, managed to survive nearly four years of hellish confinement in Japanese prison camps."

In memoriam Waffen-SS officer Heinz Barthconvicted in 1983 for his role in the 1944 massacre of the inhabitants of the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane and sentenced to life in prisonreportedly died in Germany within the last few days at the age of 86.
