Bruce Cunningham—a USAAF fighter pilot in North Africa and the Pacific—died on 21 August in California.

George Gatter—a graduate of the US Naval Academy who served in the Pacific— died on 24 August in California at the age of 83.

Capt. Robert Alfred Bush—skipper of USS Duffy (DE-27) in the Pacific—died on 26 August in California.

Glenn Ford—a veteran of the US Marines and the Battle of Midway, but better known as a movie actor—died on 30 August in California at the age of 90.
