USN veteran Gene Benedetti died in California on 13 January at the age of 86. He skippered an LCT during the invasions of North Africa, Italy, and France, and he was wounded at Anzio and Omaha Beach and earned the Silver Star. His older brother, Dante Benedetti, was a USMC pilot who was shot down and killed by an IJN fighter over Guadalcanal in October 1942.

USN Lieutenant Commander Brent Maxwell Abel—commanding USS Buckley (DE-51) when it attacked and rammed U-66 in the Atlantic on 6 May 1944, sinking the U-boat after hand-to-hand combat while the vessels lay side-by-side, and capturing many of the German crew—has died in California at the age of 89.
