Retired USMC Brigadier General James Blais—whose WWII assignments included command of the Marine detachment aboard USS Hornet during the Doolittle raid, the Battle of Midway, and the carrier's loss in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands—died on 9 October in California at the age of 90.
