Sometimes when we run across an interesting/unusual/informative book, especially an older or out-of-print one, we like to bring it to your attention. Here's one:

Burdick, Charles. Germany's Military Strategy and Spain in World War II. Syracuse, NY: Syracuse University Press, 1968

After much research in German archives and interviews with Halder, Blumentritt, Warlimont, Doenitz, Ruge and others, Burdick wrote a surprisingly engaging investigation of German preparations for an assault on Gibraltar as well as contingency plans for intervention in Spain.

Author Joe Balkoski sends this news:

"My new book on the Utah Beach invasion and US airborne and troop carrier operations on D-Day has been released by Stackpole Books. It will be a companion volume to my previous Omaha Beach book. Also, Stackpole's reissue of my original Beyond the Beachhead on the 29th Infantry Division in Normandy has been released, in its third edition. This includes a new chapter on the 29th Division's role in the Normandy fighting from July 24 to August 22, 1944, the period after the fall of St. Lo up to the liberation of Vire during the Normandy breakout.

"I am currently working on a history of the 29th Infantry Division in the Brest campaign, August 22 - September 20, 1944."

USMC Brigadier General Robert Galer—commander of VMF-224 on Guadalcanal, one of the leading Marine Corps aces of the war, and recipient of the Medal of Honor—died in Texas of a stroke on 27 June at the age of 91.
