News from J.J. Hays
30 April 2005

J.J. Hays, author of the very detailed United States Army Ground Forces Table of Organization and Equipment series, of which multiple titles are already available, sends this update on grand plans for upcoming volumes:

"Volume 7, Chemical Warfare Service: Will be a one part volume. It will be approximately 180 pages.

"Volume 8, Coast Artillery, Mobile Formations: This includes all of the mobile antiaircraft units as well as a the small number of coast artillery mobile heavy artillery units. These units were Corps, Army and Theater troops. This will probably be a three part volume, but not certain.

"Volume 9, Army Corps of Engineers: Non Divisional formations.

"Volume 10, Field Artillery: Corps and Army level artillery formations.

"Volume 11, Special Infantry Formations: 1st Special Service Force, Rangers, 5307th Composite Unit (Merrill's Marauders), 112th Cavalry, 124th Cavalry, etc.

"Volume 12, Medical Corps: Corps, Army and Theater formations.

"Volume 13, Ordnance Corps: Corps, Army and Theater formations.

"Volume 14, Quartermaster Corps: Corps, Army and Theater formations.

"Volume 15, Signal Corps. Corps: Army and Theater formations.

"After this the Armored Force, Tank Destroyer, Military Police, Transportation Corps, Army and Corps headquarters, will follow, but do not know how many volumes this will be much less parts. Later, after I complete the rest of the scheduled volumes, I might decide to go back and add parts to volume 8 covering the fixed coastal artillery installations."

Editor's Pick
29 April 2005

Sometimes when we run across an interesting/unusual/informative book, especially an older or out-of-print one, we like to bring it to your attention. Here's one:

Hesse d'Alzon, Claude. Guerre 1939-1945. La Presence Militaire Francaise en Indochine 1940-1945. Chateau de Vincennes: Service Historique de l'Armee, 1985

This book tells the complete story of French forces in Indochina during World War II: the Japanese incursion of 1940, internal rebellion, the Thai invasion, and the Japanese operations of 1945. Also includes detailed OB data. Written entirely in French, but very accessible.

Hamilton
29 April 2005

The newsprint catalog of "Bargain Books" for 1 April 2005 belatedly arrived here by mail from Edward R. Hamilton with, as usual, an assortment of WWII titles tucked away among its pages.

News from Joe Balkoski
11 April 2005

"My new book on the Utah Beach invasion and US airborne and troop carrier operations on D-Day will be published in August 2005 by Stackpole Books. It will be a companion volume to my previous Omaha Beach book. Also, Stackpole will reissue my original Beyond the Beachhead book on the 29th Infantry Division in Normandy in fall 2005. This will include new chapters on the 29th Division's role in the Normandy fighting from July 24 to August 22, 1944, the period after the fall of St. Lo up to the liberation of Vire. This is a fascinating story, and hopefully will add substantively to the information in the original edition. With luck, I hope to take the 29th Division story to Brittany and the German frontier when writing time permits."
