OUP sale We often recommend books and we constantly provide resources to make it easier to locate them, but as a rule we never suggest buying a specific book from a specific source. In this case, however, we're making an exception. In our opinion, The Oxford Companion to World War II belongs on the bookshelf of every WWII collector; indeed, if you can only acquire one book about the Second World War, this should be it. Now we see that the publisher, Oxford University Press, has the softcover edition on sale for the ridiculously low price of US$10.00. Our advice? If you don't already own it, purchase this book immediately!

Editor's pick Sometimes when we run across an interesting/unusual/informative book, especially an old and out-of-print one, we like to bring it to your attention. Here's a pair: US Army. Japanese Monograph No. 71: Army Operations in China, December 1941 - December 1943. Washington, DC: Department of the Army, 1956 US Army. Japanese Monograph No. 72: Army Operations in China, January 1944 - August 1945. Washington, DC: Department of the Army, 1956 This pair comes from the series of Japanese Monographs (about 160 volumes), covering every campaign in Asia and the Pacific, prepared by Japanese officers under the direction of (mostly) the US Army at the end of the war. The quality of the monographs varies enormously, as does the length (from about five pages to several hundred pages each). These two books on operations in China are examples of some of the better work, and both contain a great deal of valuable information from the Japanese perspective along with excellent maps and OBs. Very difficult to find this kind of detailed material on this particular subject elsewhere. Perhaps some enterprising publisher will decide to reprint the cream of the crop, including these two?

New system for book subjects We're currently in the process of switching over to our new, multi-dimensional system of categorizing WWII-related books into thousands of specific subject areas with links among all related categories to make it even easier to find books about any topic. Although the new system remains under construction, it already offers far more information and functionality than our old system, so we think it's worth making the change even though work is not yet complete. Please bear with us while we continue to create new categories, load books, and link related categories for rapid browsing. You can use the following approaches to access the new system:

Ramrod shutting down Here's an excerpt from an email which arrived today from Dilip Sarkar of Ramrod Publications: "After lengthy deliberations, therefore, Anita and I have decided to wind up Ramrod Publications. We founded the business back in 1992...and since then, without any previous experience or training, we have published 15 of my 17 books, and both of Robert Rudhall's excellent works on the 1969 film Battle of Britain. Charity, both locally and nationally, has benefited from our endeavours, in particular our own 'Surma Memorial Trust for Youth' and the Douglas Bader Foundation. Perhaps most importantly, however, through our book launches and symposiums, we managed to somehow bring the Battle of Britain to life and promote commemoration of that epic conflict to both the general public and educational establishments. Furthermore, as a result of our research and writing, a significant amount of primary material has been preserved and recorded in permanent form. That so many others have followed our lead is probably the greatest indicator of success. "...it is my intention to eventually release Part Two [of Johnnie Johnson: Spitfire Top Gun] through an existing publisher. My interest in the subject remains undiminished, rest assured.... "Finally, we thank you all for your essential support and help over the years and do hope that you will keep in touch...."
