...tells us that he has been shopping for a new publisher for his popular Black Cross, Red Star series of Russian Front air combat books. Now that Eric Hammel's Pacifica Military History will only be doing softcover reprints of existing titles, expect several suitors to try to acquire the remainder of the BC/RS series. Bergstrom says that volume three is ready to go, and "will hopefully be out by the summer of 2003."

Editor's Pick
20 September 2002

Sometimes when we run across an interesting/unusual/informative book, especially an old and out-of-print one, we like to bring it to your attention. Here's one, or in this case an entire series:

Krigen i Norge 1940

Despite a plethora of books covering operations in Norway during 1940, remarkably little space is devoted to Norwegian forces in English-language works about the campaign. For those who want to do more than just scratch the surface, this series from Oslo contains unsurpassed detail. Although written entirely in Norwegian—which can be daunting for researchers without some background in Scandinavian languages—the volumes also include much in the way of maps, photos, and OB material.

News from Greg Urwin
3 September 2002

"The History Channel has commissioned Greystone Communications to produce a two-hour documentary based on Facing Fearful Odds. It is tentatively titled "The Alamo of the Pacific" and is directed by Martin Gillam. I spent the last week of August 2002 on Wake Island with Gillam, five Wake Island Marines (Cpls. Ralph Holewinski, John S. Johnson, John Dale, and Robert Haidinger, and Pfc. Jack Skaggs), one Wake Contractor (Bill Taylor, who met Mao Zedong after escaping from a Japanese prison train in China), and a film crew to shoot interviews on the actual battle sites. The documentary will probably air in the spring of 2003."

News from S. C. Heal
2 September 2002

"Thought you might like a little advance notice that Vanwell will be releasing Ugly Ducklings: Japan's Liberty Ship of WWII, sometime this Fall. It will be somewhat similar to Great Fleet of Ships, although a smaller book. It will be dealing fairly intensively with the Japanese version of their 10,000 wartime emergency standard freighter known as the Type-A. It will feature a complete fleet list of all 150 ships of the type and will cover territory that I believe has never been covered before in the English language."
