"The second one in line is the first in the Bletchlely Park series - which is the history of Hut 3...

"Then comes the French Army, vol II. Sharp has also started volume III - now that does not mean he has not done the research!! - it means he is actually writing it and two weeks ago he had got as far as page 60. So I think we should have it published by Christmas."

Editor's Pick
19 July 2002

Sometimes when we run across an interesting/unusual/informative book, especially an old and out-of-print one, we like to bring it to your attention. Here's one:

Kay, Robin. Chronology: New Zealand in the War, 1939-1946. Wellington, NZ: Historical Publications Branch, 1968

Physically not much to look at—138 8.25"x11.25" typescript pages bound with staples—but for anyone interested in NZ armed forces during the war, this is a treasure trove of chronologically organized details gathered by one of the authors of their official history series.

News from Marc Rikmenspoel
15 July 2002

"My latest book, Waffen-SS: The Encyclopedia, has just been published. It is released by special arrangement as an exclusive edition of the Military Book Club, meaning that is at present the only source for obtaining it.

"I actually see the book as more of an almanac, since it isn't an encyclopedia in the classic sense of containing comprehensive alphabetized listings. Instead, it is a compendium of basic information, such as a detailed OOB, descriptions of armaments, biographies of important personalities, and an in-depth look at the non-Germans in the force.

"I also edited the memoirs of Alfred Novotny, a veteran of Panzerfusilier Regiment Grossdeutschland. He self-published these in 1996, but this revised and expanded edition of his book The Good Soldier is scheduled for release by Aegis/Aberjona later this summer."

Editor's Pick
11 July 2002

Sometimes when we run across an interesting/unusual/informative book, especially an old and out-of-print one, we like to bring it to your attention. Here's one:

Hayashi, Saburo with Alvin D. Coox. Kogun: The Japanese Army in the Pacific War. Quantico, VA: Marine Corps Association, 1959

This is the seminal work on the Japanese Army in World War II—packed with OBs and hard data about units and movements—but long out of print, hard to find, and expensive (in the US$250.00 range) when located. We're feeling pretty darn smug about snagging a copy at a local general secondhand shop last week for $22.50....

Editor's Pick

Talk about your obscure units! This is the 153-page history of the Belgian government-in-exile's colonial brigade of Congolese troops in action in the campaign against Italian East Africa. In French, but includes great OBs, photos, and maps.
