Montgomery, Jim. B Company: 776 Tank Destroyer Battalion in Combat. Baltimore: Gateway, 1983.

no ISBN
118 pages

Introduction; maps; photos; documents.

Jim Montgomery served with the 776th Tank Destroyer Battalion. This is the self-published, typescript chronicle of his personal, day by day journey through WWII, beginning 7 January 1943 when his outfit began moving to Staten Island to be transported to North Africa. Each daily entry is very matter of fact about rations, weather, and recreation as well as combat and casualties. The battalion fought in Tunisia, Italy, France, and Germany and Montgomery charts his company's movement, location, operations, and losses through all those venues. He ends the war in Austria, serves various guard duties, and after seemingly interminable delays and false hopes finally boards the SS David Shanks in Marseille and sails for home on 20 September 1945. On 25 September, too seasick to make further entries, the journal ceases.

"I was asked along with others if I wanted to reenlist? I told them I would not consider it even if I were commissioned a five star General."

Available by direct mail from Montgomery's son.

Thanks to Dr. Tom Montgomery for providing this review copy.
