Gieck, Jack. Lichfield: The U.S. Army on Trial. Akron, OH: University of Akron Press, 1997.

ISBN 1-884836-27-5
278 pages

Prologue; photos; Epilogue; Notes.

Appendices: Findings in the Trial of Sergeant Judson H. Smith; Dramatis Personae

This is a strong dose or military court proceedings, held at the end of the war when the commandant and guards at the U.S. Army's Lichfield depot in England were accused of running a "concentration camp for American soldiers." Gieck presents chilling testimony -- including blatant perjury, some of it later recanted -- and quotes transcripts of the proceedings sufficient to make one wonder if the term "military justice" might be an oxymoron.

It's also worth noting that page 238 includes a taped in errata stating "Colonel Kilian [the camp commander] was found not guilty..." which covers the printed text reading "Colonel Kilian was found guilty...."

Available from mail order booksellers, local bookstores, or directly from University of Akron Press.
