Gieck, Jack. Lichfield: The U.S. Army on Trial. Akron, OH: University of Akron Press, 1997.
ISBN 1-884836-27-5 Prologue; photos; Epilogue; Notes. Appendices: Findings in the Trial of Sergeant Judson H. Smith; Dramatis Personae This is a strong dose or military court proceedings, held at the end of the war when the commandant and guards at the U.S. Army's Lichfield depot in England were accused of running a "concentration camp for American soldiers." Gieck presents chilling testimony -- including blatant perjury, some of it later recanted -- and quotes transcripts of the proceedings sufficient to make one wonder if the term "military justice" might be an oxymoron. It's also worth noting that page 238 includes a taped in errata stating "Colonel Kilian [the camp commander] was found not guilty..." which covers the printed text reading "Colonel Kilian was found guilty...." Available from mail order booksellers, local bookstores, or directly from University of Akron Press. Thanks to U of Akron for providing this review copy. Reviewed 15 July 1997
