War Department. German Military Dictionary: German-English, English-German. Mt. Ida, Arkansas: Lancer Militaria, n.d.
446 pages Originally published in 1944, this edition is a copy of the original with a new title page, a new cover, and no other changes. The Lancer edition itself has been out of print, but is now being reprinted for release in January. The German-English half of the dictionary occupies 219 pages. The English-German section runs to about 210 pages. Appendices cover numbers, weights and measures, and German military abbreviations. This is not a general dictionary by any means. Almost every single word has been selected for its applicability to military equipment and operations. Similarly, many of these terms -- such as "axis of advance", "pack howitzer", and "smoke-producing unit" -- are not usually found in a standard dictionary. On the other hand, this book by itself is not designed for translating German-language material, as it contains very few common, non-military terms. A very handy reference. Available from mail order booksellers, local bookshops, or directly from Lancer Militaria for $19.95. Thanks to Lancer for providing this review copy. Reviewed 26 December 1996
