Goulter, Christina J. M. A Forgotten Offensive: Royal Air Force Coastal Command's Anti-Shipping Campaign, 1940-1945. London: Frank Cass, 1995.

ISBN 0-7146-4617-2
366 pages

Foreword; acknowledgements; preface; abbreviations; maps; photos; diagrams; bibliography; tables; index.

"Ugly Duckling" sister to Bomber Command and Fighter Command, Coastal Command waged war not only against the enemy submarine offensives, but also against Axis surface shipping, notably on the iron ore route from Scandinavia to Germany. This study puts the microscope on that anti-shipping role and explains how, despite the demands of Bomber Command and the constant diversion of forces, Coastal Command contributed to the breakdown of the German war economy.
Chapters cover the origin of anti-shipping missions, inter-war evolution, the development of tactics, and the eventual success of Coastal Command's strategy, with a lengthy cost-benefit analysis. Also includes OBs and tables of German production and shipping statistics.
Available from online booksellers, local bookshops, or directly from Frank Cass or its US distributor, International Specialized Book Service.
