Kirby, S. Woodburn. The War Against Japan, volume III: The Decisive Battles. London: HMSO, 1961.

559 pages.

Introduction; photos; maps; sources; index.

Appendix: 30 appendices including orders of battle, chains of command, losses, logistics, code names, etc.

Within the British official "History of the Second World War", five volumes comprise the "War Against Japan" series, all by Major General S. Woodburn Kirby with several assistants.
This book covers in detail Allied air-land-sea planning and operations in India and Burma from September 1943 through August 1944, with an emphasis on the Battles of Imphal and Kohima. Additional chapters discuss operations in China, the Pacific, and the Indian Ocean.
As with all the British official histories, this is a volume that belongs in the library of every serious student of World War II. All five of these are among the more difficult titles to locate, and this one can run in the neighborhood of US$100.
Thanks to World War II Books for providing this copy. Their web pages are a good place to find this title as well as all the other HMSOs.
